Profile: I have been in private practice as a textile restorer and conservator since 1978. My work covers quite a wide array of objects. Most of the textiles I am asked to restore or conserve, which includes washing, and mounting for display, are handmade; many have a great deal of sentimental value to the client. I enjoy being challenged with complicated problems; and totally enjoy communicating with my client to understand what they see as the problem; how they are hoping the result will be; how the textile is intended to be used; and also being given the chance to educate as well. A large part of my textile restoration/conservation practice includes handmade rugs, including my favorite, old kilims, which are flat woven tapestry rugs. Also I restore or conserve tapestries, needlepoint, upholstery, coverlets, quilts, samplers, hooked rugs, among others. Some years back I was asked to reweave holes in unprimed canvas of what are called ‘color field’ paintings. This was a tremendous challenge, and the paintings conservator who contacted me about doing this had asked many conservators before me who said it could not be done. I did it, and seem to be able to move between ‘restoration’ and ‘conservation’ although often these two overlap. Another interesting task was reweaving holes in Mickey Mantle’s last uniform. And, as I say, I enjoy coming up with solutions for textiles with seemingly undo-able reweaving. I have been blessed with a talent to do this, am very proud and happy to make my clients start anew with their beloved object, and welcome new clients. I am not exclusive to important or otherwise high end textiles, so I hope anyone who contacts me will be assured that their object will be treated with the same respect as all others. And, totally separate from my private practice, I am also part time staff member at the Metropolitan Museum of Art since 1991, restoring medieval tapestries.
